Frances Kirby, who for a number of years acted as Property and Stage Manager for many Farnham Rep productions, has sadly died.
Resourceful and dedicated, Frances devoted her energy to the interests of amateur and professional theatre societies alike in our area. She will be remembered always as the ‘go to’ person for sourcing props, prompting duties or helping out as director’s assistant.
As many will recall, when it came to sourcing props, her garage and shed in Upper Hale was an Aladdin’s cave of items she had somehow acquired, begged or borrowed and, if all else failed, made by her own fair hand. Not always a wild success even by her own admission – witness the banquet ‘swan’ and the disintegrating lute made from polystyrene for a Farnham Shakespeare production − but she would always come up with the goods and good grace, however pressed for time.
Frances (she hated being called ‘Fran’) was passionate about film, evidenced by her wide knowledge of the subject, her collection of star biographies, and countless volumes on the top names in the world of Hollywood directors. Her bookshelves were filled with box sets, play scripts, classic film DVDs and music.
Although she never trod the boards herself, her mission behind the scenes was to help to make performing life easier for all involved. Sadly, in later life she was robbed of that tireless energy she put into every production with which she was involved but, despite failing health, her interest never waned. She will be missed by all of us who had the privilege of knowing her.
